Just wondering...

I have been thinking, do you  have a calaloge or brochure about James Howards products? if you do could you please email me and we could discuss where to go from there they would look something like these on the inside.

We are number 4 on google in a search of "howards of bedford blog" and we've had over 160 page views heres the proof

New email, New contact

Good afternoon everyone,

I have recived an email from a new Emailee if you like It goes as follows

Hi

We found portions of a Howard Bedford DD2 R plough.  The plough is in pieces and very old/rusted at a farmstead site last occupied about 100 years ago.

The site is in Graaff Reinet, South Africa on the farm Roode Bloem.

We will try to get some pictures of the pieces.

I look forward to seeing those pictures

in case youve forgotten, or havent looked down the blog this is a ddr 2 plough (from picture bank/ not the real thing)

Please note

Please note that a few weeks ago I sent out Author Invitations to my dad (to whom the plough that started the blog belongs) and our Informant from Australia who is restoring a plough over there

I know that I also promised a while back to post photos of the plough that started it all well I've hit a snag and I WILL post them but at the moment I cant say when maybe in a week maybe a month I don't know at the moment. I am sorry for the delay and will continue otherwise.

UPDATE:

Remember this logo?

well I sent an email of to the people selling them at their website enquiring weather they were looking at the same Howard as us and this is what i got back.

Thanks for looking us up. We only deal with Companies / machinery associated with Arthur Clifford Howard, inventor of the Rotary Hoe and Cane Reaper.

All the best,

Robert Moore,
Co-Ordinator - Howard Register

at least now we know that if we see this logo its not related to our James Howard

Another picture

Here is a  Howard, Bedford 'DD2-R' horsedrawn potato flicker c/w single furrow plough attachment, restored on http://www.cheffins.co.uk

An email from dad

We already know that the exported to Australia because one of our contacts is trying to restore an Australian plough

I think howards also exported to:-

New Zealand
India
South Africa
The South Americas, e.g. Argentina,Chile,Mexico.Brazil and the like

But this would also need research. Certainly we built railways in all of these countries, and where the railways went, life went, moften to untamed land, bring on the portable ploughs, and who made them???????????

Books...

I have just realised that there is a book for Ransomes's history so it there a book of Howards's history?
I have come across a logo that may or may not be significant

it looks like an old car logo so that could give us some idea of where they moved onto if they did indeed move on

More George Fischer and Howards of Bedford...

From what information available using Google I understand that George Fischer are still in production of pipes that would have been cast at the Britannia ironworks when they ran production there, I assume they now have them made abroad and ship them in.

I am still looking for more clues about Howards the only information of them which is easy to access it at the Wikipedia page provided although I believe that they were also making Steam/Traction Engines here is a photo of a 1874 Howard Patent Traction Engine Ploughing Windlass

and this is a picture of a ENGINEERING 1874 HOWARD PATENT DOUBLE GEAR PLOUGHING WINDLASS

this is a picture of a "Howards Champion Plough" and i found it HERE

HERE IS A PICTURE OF THE ENGINEERING 1874 HOWARD PATENT DOUBLE GEAR PLOUGHING WINDLASS WORKING IN THE FIELDS found HERE

here is Howards steam ploughing and cultivating Apparatus

Howards Patent Champion plough

Howards Patent haymaking machine

Howards patent horse rake

all found HERE

I know how huge Howards were because They deported abroad to places like Australia and even made ploughs bespoke to those markets (essentially so wheels and stuff aren't interchangeable between continents)

I'm going to check on Picasa web albums for any pictures to put out to everyone.

there are no pictures of Howards ploughs on picasa

Pictures/scans of Howards Machinery/Brochures ect are near impossible to find so if you have any sitting in your cupboards at home please send them to cameron94.bater@gmail.com if you don't want/need them anymore I will willingly except donations again contact me at my email and we can talk. PLEASE NO SPAMMING.

Another Email about what our friends are doing latley.

Hi Cameron, Just touching base to check on your progress with the Howard plough. I have been very busy making 1/16th scale tractors and machines so have not progressed with my plough except for research and discovery.

At a vintage harvesting day last December I managed to find, in the farm scrap heap, a rear axle complete with one 24" wheel from a Howard plough that was exactly the same as mine. (see pics 7598/99) This was a real bonus as now I know exactly what I am looking for the other wheels.

Then last Saturday I managed to get a 20" plough wheel at a clearing sale with spokes that seemed the same as the Howard wheel (see pics 7826/27). It was not until I got it home and cleaned it up a bit that I found it was actually a Howard of Bedford England plough wheel. This wheel had a much heavier hub than my other wheel - it is a solid casting with a 2" x 1 1/2" tapered axle as against the 1 1/2" x 1" hub from the plough.

While I am still on the lookout for another original wheel, I aim to make a pattern of the original hub and cast a new hub into the 20" centre for the front wheel. If that looks and works out OK I may have to reproduce a 3rd wheel from scratch unless I find an original.

Other than the above I was given one new share so I am also on the lookout for another share.

Cheers for now

There were pictures but I can't upload them at the Library so will post them later.
Good luck on your prodject

here are the pictures
